Biography - David Schneuer (1905 - 1988)

Schneuer developed his style early in the 1920's when he was employed as a full time poster painter by a Munich theatre company and had to produce at least one poster every week. During this period he visited Paris spending six months in the city of Toulouse-Lautrec, and soaking up the influence of the giant of poster art.

He also met and befriended some of the towering artistic influences of the era: Thomas Mann, Bertold Brecht, Kurt Weill. Living through such a fertile time clearly influenced him and left a lasting legacy.

His illustrative style, with its strong and confident line, makes his work appear fresh and timeless, bridging the gap between Post-Impressionism, German Expressionism and the new Modernist work.

Darker forces were to overshadow this rich cultural scene, and in 1932 Schneuer was sent to Dachau. He was released a year later and escaped to Tel Aviv, in what was then Palestine. His work blossomed there, and his paintings, posters and public murals were received with great enthusiasm. He lived there until his death in 1988.

He is now internationally recognised as an important and significant artist whose work reflects some of the key innovations of the 20th century such as two dimensional perspective and commercial design.
